a photographic document involves preparation in excess

Dinu Lazăr

Producing a photographic document involves preparation in excess. There is first the examination of the idea of the project. Then the visits to the scene, the casual conversations, and more formal interviews - talking, and listening, and looking, looking. ... And finally, the pictures themselves, each one planned, talked, taken and examined in terms of the whole. -Aaron Siskind

a miserable confession of inability to treat photography

Dinu Lazăr

I am of the opinion that to dodge a negative in any way whatever except the spotting out of unavoidable mechanical defects, is not art, but a miserable confession of inability to treat photography as a fine art… I contend that… any artistic effect desired can be faithfully done by pure photography without any retouching whatever. -George Smith

The condition is total absorption

Dinu Lazăr

The start of a photograph is from a previous picture. There is no preconception, rather predisposition (which predisposition includes the camera, lenses and the film with me at the time). I will usually return to a familiar place or one that seems familiar. I stand still or move slowly, feeling things like the impulse of shapes, the direction of lines, the quality of surfaces. I frame with my eye (sometimes with my hands) as the ground glass would frame. Nothing that one could reasonably call thinking is taking place al this stage.

a pane of glass

Dinu Lazăr

Most photographers seem to operate with a pane of glass between themselves and their subjects. They just can't get inside and know the subject. -W. Eugene Smith

I like pictures that surmount the darkness

Dinu Lazăr

In music I still prefer the minor key, and in printing I like the light coming from the dark. I like pictures that surmount the darkness, and many of my photographs are that way. It is the way I see photographically. For practical reasons, I think it looks better in print too. -W. Eugene Smith

Photography is just a weak voice

Dinu Lazăr

Photography is just a weak voice, but sometimes, only sometimes, one or more pictures can take our senses to the consciousness; photography induces in ocations to so intense emotions that reach the point of reagent of the mind. -W. Eugene Smith

What uses having a great depth of field

Dinu Lazăr

What uses having a great depth of field, if there is not an adequate depth of feeling? -W. Eugene Smith

hold it

Dinu Lazăr

It's no good saying "hold it" to a moment in real life. -Lord Snowdon

If there is a good thing about photography

Dinu Lazăr

If there is a good thing about photography, it is that it can be easily enjoyed. -Lord Snowdon
